Start with a commercial brief
A useful ODM brief connects the product idea to a real customer and market. State your sales country, target user, intended retail positioning, estimated first order and preferred launch window. Add a benchmark if you have one, but explain which attributes matter: absorption, fragrance, finish, packaging or application. A reference bottle alone cannot tell a laboratory what your brand needs.
Choose the development route
Clarify whether you want an existing formula direction adapted to your brand or a more extensive development project. Ask what can be customized, which changes require new testing, and how formula ownership and exclusivity will be recorded. OEM and ODM terminology can vary between suppliers, so compare the actual scope rather than the label.
Evaluate samples consistently
Compare samples under the same application conditions and record the amount used, application time and observations. Separate immediate feel from performance after the product has settled. Give ranked feedback: for example, reduce tackiness first, then adjust fragrance. Changing several objectives at once can make the next sample harder to assess.
Approve formula and packaging together
A formula that works in a sample jar may behave differently in a pump, dropper or tube. Confirm the fill volume, dispensing performance, decoration, carton and compatibility evaluation before approving production. Keep the approved sample, written specification and artwork version together so all parties work from the same reference.
Plan production and delivery
Request a schedule that separates sampling, component procurement, testing, production and shipment. Agree release checks, documents and inspection arrangements before payment milestones are finalized. Launch dates should allow for sample revisions and component delays; an initial estimate is not a confirmed delivery commitment.
